Built-in chest of drawers
Installing a chest of drawers is a classic choice for a fireplace alcove.
The challenge here was that the window sill protrudes from the wall and a full-width piece was not an option because of it. The brief was as follows:
- Create a storage solution that can be taller than the window sill, but is not limited by it
- Use IKEA products, but make it look built-in.
Here an IKEA RAST piece was modified by raising it, replacing the top and adding cubbies.

The chest of drawers were raised so that the skirting board selected for the room would fit. Additionally the kick board was moved forward to avoid a dust trap between the bottom drawer and skirting board.
Next the top of the chest of drawers was removed and replaced with a nice bit of matching solid wood with the same width as the alcove. The vertical piece on the left is the original top, reused here as a side for the cubbies.
Shelves added. These are also from matching solid wood.
Skirting board in place, paint and trim added.
The finished product looks like it’s always been there.
